The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering in SCAU was established in 1992, and offered the Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree for the major of Environmental Protection, a Master Degree for the major of Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D degree for the major of Agricultural Environmental Science. Nowadays our department has a staff of 23 people, 4 of which are professors, 11 have sub-senior professional titles (including  associate professor, senior engineer and senior experimentalist), with 18 of the faculty holding a Ph. D degree. The department offers two Bachelor's Degrees in Environmental Science and Environment Engineering, and has a total enrollment of 700 undergraduate students. Areas of expertise include wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste treatment and disposal, soil pollution remediation, environmental monitoring, environmental planning and evaluation, cleaner production and circular economics. There are about 50 graduate students dedicated in the field of soil, water and air pollution & control, solid waste disposition and resource utilization, organic pollutant remediation, and so on.

The Department of Environmental Science and Engineering institutes the Center of Wastewater Treatment and Ecological Engineering and the Key laboratory of Soil Environment and Agricultural Utilization of Solid Waste (Guangdong Province). In the past 5 years, our department has accomplished achievements in the field of heavy metal polluted soil remediation, migration and transformation of organic pollutants in soil,  solid waste resource utilization, controlled release fertilizer new technology, constructed wetland for wastewater treatment, odorous-black river in-situ sediment treatment, environmental microbial community structure analysis, and so on. We have hold more than 20 national, 20 provincial and 30 horizontal scientific research projects, with researchfunds of more than 15 million China Yuan. We have published more than 30 SCI or EI papers and 2 professional books, been authorized for more than 20 national invention patents, and won a series of national or provincial Science-Technology Progress Prize. In recent years, the integrated technogly for the large-scale livestock breeding wastewater treatment, urban sludge anaerobic digestion technology and constructed wetland technoglogy for rural sewage treatment developed by our department have been popularized and applied widely in South China. Our department also established academic programs with several famous universities in Europe and the United States such as Université de Lorraine (France), Rutgers University (USA), University of Massachusetts Amherst (USA) and Ohio State University (USA).
